The Albany-area athlete, a member of the Capital Region Sliders Volleyball Club, was playing in the Boston Volleyball Festival when he collapsed inside the Boston Convention Center on Friday night, Feb. 21, police told WCVB.

Days later, the boy remained hospitalized in critical condition, according to family friend Odette Fung.

“A family in my son’s club volleyball team is amid a parent’s worst nightmare,” Fung wrote on a GoFundMe campaign.

The boy’s age and hometown were not immediately available.

“We recognize the impact such incidents have on the entire volleyball community, and we remain committed to providing any necessary assistance and resources at this time,” AJ Joseph, president of the Boston Volleyball Tournament, told WCVB.

Fung described the teen and his family as “loving and hardworking,” adding that the entire family shares a love for volleyball.

“I know that if another family were in a similar situation, they would be one of the first to find out how they can help,” she said.

“If you are a volleyball parent, a volleyball player, or just a person who wants to help this family, I am asking for your generosity,” Fund continued, adding that all money raised will help cover mounting medical bills, temporary housing, and other necessities.

“I am hoping to raise enough funds so that they can worry less about how they need to survive financially, and to give them the mental space to stay focused on helping their son, and each other during this incredibly challenging time,” she said.

The campaign had raised over $60,000 as of Tuesday, Feb. 25. Those who wish to donate can do so via GoFundMe.
